FARMINGTON — Slick, slushy roads hampered the ability of a driver of a loaded logging truck to stop in time for another tractor-trailer making a turn off Routes 2 and 4 Tuesday morning. Neither driver was hurt.

Michael Mealey, 45, of Jefferson, N.H., was driving the logging truck east toward Somerset County, Farmington patrol officer William Tanner said.

Mealey was following a VIP tractor-trailer driven by Matthew Kohler, 35, of Lewiston about 8:30 a.m. Kohler attempted to make a right turn in to VIP Parts, Tires & Service at 464 Wilton Road. He pulled into the left lane of the two eastbound lanes of the four-lane highway, Tanner said.

Mealey who works for Hicks Logging Co. of Jefferson couldn’t stop the logging truck and struck the side of the VIP trailer, Tanner said. The front edge of the logging trailer hit the VIP trailer, breaking into its side, he said.

Neither driver was injured and both were alone.

The logging tractor received about $2,000 damage. It was driven from the scene, Tanner said. The trailer received little damage.

The VIP trailer was totaled. Some parts may be salvaged but the logging trailer not only broke through the sheet metal sides of the VIP trailer, it also broke the aluminum supports along the top and bottom, he said.

The trailer was about two-thirds full of auto parts and tires. The extent of damage to the contents was not known. Workers were still unloading items in to a new trailer Tuesday afternoon, he said.

“No charges were filed, although technically, he (the driver of the logging truck) was following too close for road conditions. Anytime there’s not time to react to what goes on in front of you, you’re following too close,” he said. “It was pretty slick with an icy rain coming down.”

There were several other accidents around the area, including two on the Industry Road where drivers went off the road due to road conditions, Tanner said.
