FARMINGTON — A woman is in custody following a standoff with the Farmington Police Department and the Maine State Police Tactical Team Saturday afternoon.

According to a statement from the Farmington Police Department, officers were dispatched about 3 p.m. Saturday to 422 Farmington Falls Road to investigate a domestic assault and a report of self-injury involving a hatchet.

Police said that resident Rebekah Brown, 38, assaulted another person with a shovel and struck her own arm with a hatchet before retreating to the house where there was known to be a loaded firearm.

According to the report, Brown refused to speak with the officers so the Maine State Police Tactical Team and a crisis team negotiator were called in.

After several hours, contact was made with Brown, who eventually surrendered without incident.

Brown was treated at the scene for the self-inflicted injury to her arm, and then taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital for a mental health evaluation. She was later moved to the Franklin County Correctional Facility, where she is being held on $10,000 cash bail.

A firearm, hatchet and kitchen knife were recovered at the scene.

Brown has been charged with domestic violence assault and creating a police standoff.

The Farmington Falls Road, also known as Routes 2 and 27, was closed by the Farmington Fire Department for safety concerns for about seven hours.
