BUCKFIELD — Selectmen on Thursday night issued a permit for live entertainment at the newly opened Captain Bly’s Tavern on Route 117.
The decision to approve a special amusement permit followed a public hearing where residents and selectmen expressed support for the business and hoped it would be successful. However, concern was expressed that it not become a nuisance to neighbors in a predominantly residential neighborhood.
Co-owner Jason Rowe stressed they wanted to be good neighbors.
“I’ll be glad to give our neighbors my telephone number and if they think the music is too loud I’ll turn it down,” he said. He indicated they are still experimenting to determine what works best for their business and would like flexibility to try different things.
He said they are planning Sunday Jazz brunches where a jazz musician would entertain the brunch crowd and Senior Lunches where an artist would perform pieces.
Resident Rick Jeselskis was concerned about the impact of the entertainment on his home and rental property in the area.
Resident and former Town Manager Glen Holmes pointed out that town ordinance provides that selectmen must call a public hearing to review any complaints submitted by residents.
The permit allows live entertainment inside the tavern during regular business hours and until 12:15 a.m. on six special occasions per year.
In other business, selectmen considered an offer from fire Chief Tim Brooks to repair the fire and rescue station roof for $35 per hour plus material. He said that he has done repairs on the roof for free on numerous occasions.
Selectmen were appreciative of Brooks’ past contribution and this offer, but thought they should get bids to avoid any criticism.
A mold problem has developed in the building due to the roof leaks.
Selectmen accepted a bid of $3,450 to do a minimal mold remediation. They will rip out moldy material and cover the exposed areas and clean duct work. Selectmen are investigating major renovations to the building.
A special election for a selectman will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 23 in the Town Office. Warren Wright and William Sullivan Jr. have turned in nomination papers to be on the ballot.
The winner will succeed Rodney Allen, who died suddenly Nov. 25.
