RANGELEY (AP) — Maine wardens are searching for the body of a 45-year-old woman who crashed through the ice on Rangeley Lake on her snowmobile and didn’t come up in Maine’s first snowmobile fatality of the season.

The Maine Warden Service said Dawn Newell of Yarmouth and her 16-year-old son were riding on separate snowmobiles early Sunday evening when her machine crashed through the ice.

Officials said her son, who was following behind, started to break through the ice but was able to jump to solid ice and get to shore, where he called 911.

Cpl. John MacDonald said game wardens are planning recovery efforts Monday that will include a Warden Service dive team and aircraft.
