Ruth Burke was waiting for her job interview to begin at the Department of Health and Human Services in Lewiston when she noticed there was no place for children to play while parents waited to speak to case workers. “The kids did not have much to do except get on their parents’ nerves,” Burke said. She got a job at Advocates for Children soon after and put the plan for a children’s play space into action. Advocates and DHHS collaborated on the project, and Burke’s plan came to fruition during an official opening on Thursday at the DHHS office on Main Street. Raising Readers provided children’s books, and toys were purchased with a grant from the York Foundation.
