TURNER — Maranacook has been searching for a way to bust out of its recent offensive slump. The solution came Tuesday night, at Leavitt’s expense.

Kyle Boucher dominated inside with 23 points and 17 rebounds and Taylor Wilbur and Cam Brochu provided plenty of balance outside as Maranacook dealt a blow to Leavitt’s tournament security and snapped its own four-game losing streak with a 59-53 victory.

“We were getting tired of losing and I think we figured out we had to work harder to win, and we did. We worked very hard,” Maranacook coach Rob Schmidt said.

The 6-foot-8 Boucher led the Black Bears (7-10) on the offensive glass with five rebounds. The second chances helped cover for an up-and-down shooting night (40 percent).

Maranacook got hot at the right times. Wilbur scored eight of his 13 points in a first quarter that saw the Black Bears roar out to a 16-7 lead. Brochu scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer and a putback during a 16-6 fourth quarter run that helped put the game away.

“We did hit some of the shots tonight that we haven’t been hitting,” Schmidt said. “They’ve been good shots, but we’ve just been cold.”

Andrew Middleton led Leavitt (6-11) with 16 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Mitchel Davis added 14 points and Isaiah Calder 11 points.

“They got off to a good start, to start the game and to start the second half,” Leavitt coach Mike Hathaway said. “I thought in the second half we didn’t really do a great job of running our sets. We settled for some shots that came open early in our sets that weren’t great shots.”

The Hornets, who were playing without 6-foot-7 center Matt Powell (high ankle sprain) could have clinched a spot in the Western B tournament with a win. A win Thursday against Morse should do the same thing, but they may need help punching their ticket if they lose.

Besides leading in the early stages of the game, Leavitt only led one other time, on an inside hoop by Middleton that made it 23-22 with 30 seconds left in the first half. Kent Mohlar answered with a 3-pointer to put the Bears up again before intermission.

Maranacook led by as much as seven early in the third quarter. Austin Anderson and Zac Goulette hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull the Hornets back within one, but Maranacook scored eight straight, then took a 43-36 lead into the fourth quarter thanks to a Boucher dunk after the Bears broke Leavitt’s press.

The Hornets closed back to within two on a Middleton putback and another Goulette 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter, but that was as close as they would get. They would score just one field goal in the next five minutes, and back-to-back putbacks by Boucher helped the Black Bears open up their first double-digit lead, 57-47, with 1:33 remaining.

“I thought our offensive rebounding was outstanding, and that may have made the difference,” Schmidt said. “We just played a lot more aggressive and like we wanted to win the game.”

“We got beat on the glass. The rebounding differential was too much,” Hathaway said.
