PORTLAND — Hot on the heels of the largest and most prestigious of mountain film festivals in the world, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour will return for its 12th year to Portland at 7 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 10 and Monday, Feb. 11 at the State Theatre, 609 Congress St.

This year’s selection of magnificent cinematography tells powerful stories that reflect a wide range of mountain experiences and portraits from mountain sports to mountain culture and the environment. Some highlights include “Crossing the Ice” which was awarded Grand Prize and also Best Adventure Film. In the film, two Australian adventurers dare to tackle the perilous journey across Antarctica to the South Pole and back again, completely unassisted.

“Reel Rock 7: Honnold 3.0” was awarded Best film on Climbing, and follows Alex Honnold, known as the boldest soloist of his generation. See how he balances pure ambition with self-preservation. “1st Afghan Ski Challenge” was awarded Banff, Best Film Mountain Sports and is filmed in a quiet corner of that conflicted country, where gutsy first-time skiers learn to ski through trial by fire.

Selected from 420 entries from over 20 countries, this year’s tour features a collection of the most inspiring and thought-provoking action, environmental and adventure mountain films with stops in 390 locations in all seven continents.
