NORWAY — Local area residents will join people around Maine at 11 a.m. Monday when they stop and reflect and pray for the Maine Wabanaki Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which will begin gathering in Hermon on Tuesday.

The Oxford Hills gathering will be at the Commons Art Collective next to Fare Share Market on Main Street in Norway from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Organizers say the gathering is to honor the work being done by the commission. The TRC represents a historic agreement to uncover and acknowledge the truth about what happened when Maine child welfare officials removed Wabanaki children from their homes and tribes and placed them in foster care.

The prayer ceremony will begin with the lighting of a candle and the stating of the group’s intention. A spoken interfaith prayer will be offered by the Rev. Sarah Shepley, followed by 10 minutes of silence and a closing blessing.

The event is open to the public, and all are welcome.
