LEWISTON — Wet snow and freezing rain Monday made driving hazardous and challenging, a driver said.

Despite the quick response by crews to clear most roads and streets of snow from the weekend blizzard, Monday’s accumulation compounded plowing issues and high snowbanks.

“It was terrible,” said Danielle Daigle of Auburn, who was driving in the city around 4 p.m. “Some of the main roads were still terrible.”

She said large piles of snow in parking lots made navigation difficult and dangerous because drivers couldn’t see other vehicles and pedestrians.

“It was scary,” Heidi Grant of New Gloucester said about the snow and slush on the streets and the difficulty of climbing hills.

She said she would rather drive in Saturday’s storm than Monday’s.

Eric Soucy of Lewiston was also worried about visibility on streets walled by high snowbanks.

“Certain roads, you can’t see whatsoever. You can’t be blinded like that,” he said.

Soucy said it wasn’t as bad earlier in the day. However, “once the rain came, it was going to get ugly.”

While Soucy, who works in Auburn, thought Lewiston did a better job with snow removal, he still has issues back home. “They didn’t do much on my street. It was barely plowed,” he said.

He said he watched one slow-moving car slide into a pole.

Roads improved throughout Monday evening as temperatures began to rise, with plenty of cleanup from winter storm Nemo left to do.
