Marshwood and Camden Hills both defended their state wrestling titles Saturday. One had to do a lot more nail-biting than the other before the day was over.
Marshwood cruised to the Class A title in Sanford, beating Massabesic, 201-113.
Skowhegan (105) was third. Mt. Blue finished sixth with 40 points.
In Class B, Camden Hills held off host Fryeburg Academy for the championship, 131.50-128.50. It is the 14th Class B title in the school’s history. Wells (118) was third. Mountain Valley (32) finished 10th, Oak Hill (13) was 14th.
Mt. Blue had two wrestlers win in the consolation finals, Khalil Newbill (126) and Travis Stuard (220). Malik Geiger of Oxford Hills won the 160-pound consolation final.
Marshwood collected six individual titles. Jared Jensen of Brunswick, who won the 170-pound title, was named outstanding wrestler. Oxford Hills earned the sportsmanship banner from the East.
Carter LaBrecque of Oak Hill was the top local wrestler in Class B, winning his 113-pound consolation final. Mountain Valley had three wrestlers reach the consi final, Nicole Burgess (106), Brandon Gill (120) and Ian Austin (152).
Hockey
Cape Elizabeth 9, Leavitt 2
TURNER — Brandon Negele scored a hat trick as Cape Elizabeth buzzed by Leavitt, 9-2, in boys’ ice hockey action Saturday.
The Hornets (4-12-1) played even on offense. But, the Capers (7-10) took the edge in goaltending.
Tyler Hutchinson cut the deficit in half, 2-1, midway through the first period for Leavitt. And, Devon McMahan added a late goal for the Hornets.
Goalies Kaleb Boulet and Alex Morgan shared keeper duties with 15 saves for Leavitt, while goalie Kevin Hare earned the win in net with 31 saves for Cape Elizabeth.
