BRIDGTON — A grade school game with some die-hard adherents has become a tradition in Bridgton, where every year more than 100 people from across New England participate in the Four Square World Championships.

Saturday will be the ninth year for the event, which is organized by the Lakes Environmental Association as a fundraiser. There is a $10 entry fee, and the group expects more than 100 contestants this year.

Four square is played among four people on a large square divided into four smaller squares. Players bounce a playground ball back and fourth, trying to bounce it past their opponents. There will be men’s and women’s divisions, divided by age. No custom rules are allowed.

Squarefour, a four square league based in Cambridge, Mass., helped to establish the contest, and the championship usually draws many competitors from Massachusetts.

Advance registration isn’t required, but the Lakes Environmental Association asks that those planning to come email LEA Executive Director Peter Lowell at so the group knows how many participants to expect.

The event will be held at the Bridgton Academy gymnasium at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23. Contestants are required to wear non-scuffing shoes.
