DURHAM — New Jersey driver Jeremy Jerschina, 24, and his passenger John Stiritz, 22, complained of pain and were transported to a Lewiston hospital after a chain-reaction crash at a construction site on Route 136 on Monday morning.

Androscoggin County Deputy Sheriff Jon Guay said a line of cars was stopped in the southbound lane and Jerschina got out of his vehicle to change drivers. Richard Barrett, 73, of Brunswick, who was driving behind him, was blinded by the sun and hit Jerschina’s vehicle starting a chain reaction.

Jerschina and Stiritz were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston by Durham Fire and Rescue.

The drivers of the other two vehicles involved were identified as Michael Duff, 45, of 66 Gamage Ave., Auburn, and Travis Jorgensen, 41, of West Road, Bowdoin. Both complained of pain but were not transported to a hospital, Guay said.

Barrett’s 2003 GMC pickup and Jerchina’s 2004 Toyota sport utility vehicle were totaled. Damage was estimated at $1,000 to Duff’s 2003 Subaru station wagon and to $1,500 to Jorgensen’s 2009 Volkswagon Beetle in the 10 a.m. crash.

No charges were filed. Route 136 was closed for about an hour.
