LEWISTON — Local police are warning residents not to fall prey to a scam where someone posing as a Hannaford pharmacist was seeking personal information by telephone.
According to the Lewiston Police Department Facebook page, a local resident called police to alert them to the scam. The resident said someone called them twice pretending to be from Hannaford. The caller requested the resident’s date of birth and Social Security number in order to fill a prescription.
The resident didn’t provide personal information and reported the suspicious caller to police. Hannaford confirmed that no pharmacist from the store had made phone calls requesting that information, police said.
Police urged residents not to divulge personal information over the phone unless they are the ones placing the call.
