BANGOR — It was a frustrating first two periods of play for the Bangor boys’ ice hockey team Wednesday night at Sawyer Arena as the second-ranked Rams (15-3) and third-ranked St. Dom’s (11-6-1) as battled it out in final game of the season.

The Saints maintained a 2-1 lead, forcing Bangor to shoot from low quality areas.

Bangor adjusted in the third period, rattling off four consecutive goals and fending off a Saints attempt to push back in the final minutes as the Rams slipped with away with a 5-4.

Brunswick 5, EL 1

AUBURN — Matt Brooks scored a goal and earned two assists as Brunswick brushed off Edward Little, 5-1, in a hockey game Wednesday night.

The Dragons (10-7-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Ryan Maciejewski, Dwayne Palmer and Jared Parent.

EL’s Branden Dyer score a goal and Brendon Croteau earned the assist on the play. The Red Eddies are still in the playoff hunt after Poland/Gray-New Gloucester defeated Mt. Ararat/Lisbon.

Gardiner 4, Leavitt 3

AUBURN — Hunter Belanger and Austin Moore each had a pair of goals to lead Gardiner to a 4-3 win over Leavitt in boys’ hockey Wednesday.

The Tigers (6-11-1) got goals from Belanger and Moore in the opening period. Moore’s goal came on the power play. Leavitt (4-13-1) got an Adam Poulin goal at 14:17 to get

within one. The Tiger then got a Belanger goal 31 seconds into the second period and a Moore shorthanded goal at 4:41 for a 4-1 lead.

Leavitt outshot Gardiner 19-6 in the third but could only get within one. Tyler Hutchinson scored both goals for the Hornets. The first came at 2:28 adn the second was at 6:31 on the power play. Devin McMahan assisted on both.

College baseball

Bates sweeps

ROME, Ga. — Kevin McGregor’s RBI single scored Griff Tewksbury with the winning run and completed his 4-for-4 game, helping the Bates College baseball team sweep a doubleheader at Berry College on Wednesday. The Bobcats outhit the Vikings 22-7 en route to winning 10-1 in Game 1 and 5-4 in Game 2. Bates continues its week in Georgia tomorrow with a nine-inning game at Emory University, beginning at 2 p.m.

Men’s basketball

Vermont 73, Maine 61

BURLINGTON, Vt. — The University of Maine men’s basketball team fell to Vermont, 73-61, at Patrick Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Maine was led by Zarko Valjarevic who had 14 points. The Catamounts opened the game on an 8-to-2 run, but 3’s by Alasdair Fraser and Valjarevic around a Vermont bucket cut the lead to 10-8. The Black Bears shot 37 percent from the field while Vermont shot 36 percent. Maine shot 44,4 percent from three-point range while Vermont shot 22.2 percent. The Catamounts went 8-10 from the free throw line while Maine did not have any attempts.

Vermont opened the second half on a 7-to-2 run, taking a 37-28 lead with 18:30 left.

Women’s basketball

Maine 73, Vermont 63

ORONO — Lauren Bodine hit seven 3-pointers, tying the school-record for most 3-pointers in a single game, on her way to a career-high 24 points to lead the University of Maine women’s basketball team (4-22, 3-10 America East) to a 73-63 win over Vermont (8-18, 5-8 AE) on Wednesday evening.

Bodine was a perfect 5-for-5 in the first half from beyond the arc and finished the game 7-for-9 as she tallied 24 points with eight rebounds and three steals.Courtney Anderson of Greene recorded her first career double-double with career-highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds to go along with six assists while Liz Wood chipped in 17 points and eight rebounds.
