With 18 games each in the rear view mirror, Maine’s top high school hockey teams will begin their playoffs with a lot of familiar names in familiar positions in the standings.

Lewiston High School, buoyed by a pair of wins over Bangor and a win and a tie against St. Dominic Academy, will be the top seed in Eastern Class A. The Blue Devils (14-3-1) suffered losses this season to Scarborough, Falmouth and Thornton Academy — all Western Class A teams — but were unbeaten against their Eastern Class A opponents en route to the top spot.

Offensively, Kyle Lemelin leads Lewiston with 30 points on the season, fifth-best in Eastern Class A and 21st overall among all Class A skaters. Matt Poulin is next on the Blue Devils’ roster with 22 points. One of the state’s top defender, Patrick DeBlois, leads a strong defensive unit that, even with a wild, 8-4 loss to Thornton on the schedule, allowed only 1.78 goals per game while averaging four goals scored.

Bangor (15-3) lost twice to Lewiston and once to Falmouth to earn the No. 2 seed, needing a 5-4 win over No. 3 St. Dom’s on the season’s final day to retain that position. The Rams are helped tremendously by the return of standout forward Parker Sanderson, who suffered an injury in a game in Auburn earlier in the season that left questions about his ability to return to game action this season.

The Saints (11-6-1), meanwhile, are again among the top teams, having played one of the top schedules in the state much like Lewiston. Brad Berube leads the Saints, who have adopted a scoring-by-committee mentality, with 20 points. None of the St. Dom’s skaters are in the top 10 in Eastern Class A scoring, but a host of Saints are planted among the top 25.

St. Dom’s also boasts one of the top goaltending duos in Maine with Grant Carrier and Austin Christopher. As the games get tighter in the playoffs, they will become even more important to the low-scoring Saints.

With an overtime win over Skowhegan on the last day of the season, Cony vaulted into the No. 4 spot and will host No. 5 Brunswick in a quarterfinal matchup. The Indians slipped to sixth and will face St. Dom’s.

Maranacook/Hall-Dale/Winthrop, by less than a point, dropped into seventh position, and instead of meeting the Saints, the Hawks will have to travel to Bangor for a date with the Rams.

Edward Little, meanwhile, celebrated late Wednesday, even after a loss in its final game of the season. After Cony defeated Skowhegan in overtime, the residual points EL gained by virtue of an early-season tie with Cony lifted the Red Eddies into the playoffs over Mt. Ararat/Lisbon after the Eagles lost their final game to Poland/Gray-New Gloucester. EL has the daunting task of facing rival Lewiston in the opening round at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Tuesday.

Western Class A

Thanks to a pair of one-goal wins over No. 2 Falmouth this season, Norm Gagne’s Scarborough Red Storm are the top seed in Western Class A, posting a 17-1 record. Big wins for the Red Storm, beyond their pair over Falmouth, included victories over East No. 1 Lewiston, and West No. 3 Gorham. St. Dom’s handed Scarborough its only loss, a 1-0 shutout on Dec. 12, the second game of the season. Since then, the Storm are 16-0, outscoring their opponents 97-17.

The Yachtsmen, at No. 2, own big wins over Lewiston, Bangor and St. Dom’s from the East, as well as Gorham, Cheverus and Thornton in the West. Falmouth’s setbacks came to Scarborough (twice) and Lewiston, with the tie coming on the season’s final day against Thornton.

At 11-6-1 and 12-6-0, No. 3 Gorham and No. 4 Cheverus snagged home-ice advantage in the quarterfinal round. The Stags may have drawn the short straw, though, as two-time defending champion Thornton sits at No. 5, despite an 8-9-1 record, due to its tough-as-nails schedule and timely victories and tie. The Trojans own wins over Lewiston and Gorham, and a tie with Falmouth.

Portland/Deering, Biddeford, Bonny Eagle and Noble/Wells round out the nine playoff teams in Western Class A. Noble/Wells and Bonny Eagle will square off in a preliminary game, with the winner to face Scarborough in the quarterfinal. Biddeford will travel to Falmouth, while Portland/Deering will face Gorham in the quarters.

Class B

The Greely Rangers and Messalonskee Eagles could once again be on a collision course to the Class B final. The Rangers (14-4), despite four losses, easily grabbed the No. 1 seed in Western Class B over Camden Hills (14-4) after back-to-back wins over the Windjammers by a combined score of 13-4 late in the season. Greely also plays an aggressive schedule featuring a handful of Class A competition. Falmouth and Lewiston are the two teams to have defeated Greely in a game, while St. Dom’s and Yarmouth own wins over the Rangers after it was determined Greely used an ineligible player in those games.

York, Yarmouth and Cape Elizabeth are also playoff-bound in Western B, but none has a winning record.

Messalonskee, meanwhile, emerged again this season as one of the top teams in Eastern Class B. The Eagles lost once to Greely, and once — in overtime — to John Bapst, which this season nailed down the No. 2 seed in Eastern B, one spot ahead of perennial contender Brewer High School.

Hampden, Orono, Presque Isle and Lawrence are the other playoff teams in Eastern B.

The quarterfinal round for this year’s playoffs will begin Tuesday. The regional semifinals will be Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2.
