RANGELEY — Residents  have been notified of a special town meeting to be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at the Rangeley Lakes Regional School.

The purpose of the meeting is to see if voters will authorize the Board of Selectmen to appropriate and expend $125,0000 from the undesignated fund balance for the purpose of purchasing a 1991 aerial truck for the Fire Department. The amount includes the $120,000 purchase price of the vehicle, plus $5,000 in transportation and decal cost.

In the board’s regular meeting on Feb. 19, fire Chief Tim Pellerin outlined the results of his search for a new ladder truck, with emphasis on an aerial platform tower truck that has been offered to the town by Centre Square Fire Company in Pennsylvania, which Rangeley has dealt with before.

The unit has a 95-foot tower with basket and x-frame outriggers, which allow it to set up in a space as narrow as 12 feet. The platform or basket at the top of the ladder enables quick transport of multiple personnel as well as ease of rescue from higher buildings.

Priced at $150,000, the Pennsylvania company has already received an offer of $175,000, but Centre Square has offered it to Rangeley for $120,000.

The 1991 truck appears to be in excellent shape, Pellerin said, and is about to undergo its certification inspection, which he said will be meticulous and minutely detailed. He added that the town should be able to look forward to 20 years of service from the truck.

The Board voted to call the special meeting as quickly as possible, as the fire department in Pennsylvania is on a tight schedule.
