GEORGETOWN, Mass. — The bus driver who was seriously injured in a Tuesday night crash involving the University of Maine women’s basketball team is resting Wednesday in what John T. Cyr & Sons general manager Rick Soules described as “stable” condition after the bus he was driving veered off a highway north of Boston into a wooded area Tuesday night.

“He is in stable condition; he is talking to his family,” Soules said in a phone interview Wednesday. He said the driver may be transferred to a burn center.

According to Massachusetts State Police, driver Jeffrey Hamlin, 55, of Charleston, Maine, appeared to have in some way become incapacitated while driving the Maine team to Boston for a game, and head coach Richard Barron jumped in and tried to right the bus.

Barron suffered facial lacerations as he was tossed into the door well of the bus. A player, freshman guard Milica Mitrovic of Belgrade, Serbia, suffered a broken hand. Many of the other players and staff on board suffered minor injuries.

“Richard said the driver had slumped over the wheel and appeared to have passed out,” UMaine Athletic Director Steve Abbott told the Bangor Daily News. “So he got up and tried to get to the wheel, but as he approached the driver, the bus hit the median and sent him flying into the door well area. He said the bus kept on cruising across the median and all the lanes of the northbound side.”

Hamlin was taken by helicopter to Boston Medical Center.

According to Soules, no official cause of the crash has been determined.

John T. Cyr & Sons celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2012, and according to Soules, has been recognized many times for its dedication to safety.

“We’ve traveled tens of millions of miles, and there haven’t been too many incidents,” Soules said. “The motor coach has been a pretty safe way to travel, not just in Maine but across the country.”

Georgetown Fire Chief Al Beardsley said it was a miracle that no other cars were struck when the bus crossed oncoming lanes.

“This is a very heavily traveled road, day and night, and for a bus that size to basically catapult across the road, I couldn’t imagine being northbound and seeing that thing coming at me,” Beardsley said at the scene.

He said authorities were still investigating what caused the driver to veer off the highway, which has four lanes in each direction and a broad median in Georgetown, a small town 30 miles north of Boston.

The bus remained upright and appeared to have plowed through a roadside snowbank, knocked down a mile marker and crashed into woods along the road before coming to rest pointing down an embankment.

“He hit pretty high up on the tree; you can see marks,” Beardsley said.

Included among the players on the bus Tuesday night was former Leavitt Area High School star Courtney Anderson of Greene. Her parents, Mark and Tammy, heard almost immediately from their daughter after the crash.

“One of the other girls gave her a phone temporarily,” Mark Anderson said. “She called us as she was headed into the ambulance for evaluation.”

Courtney Anderson was among 22 passengers to be taken to one of three hospitals for observation. All of the players were released by Wednesday morning and according to a post on Anderson’s Facebook page, had boarded a bus back to Orono. Anderson is a sophomore guard on the UMaine team.

After the accident, players — including Anderson — took to Twitter to reassure friends and family that they were OK.

“Thank you for all the prayers,” Anderson wrote. “God is good.”

She followed that post with another: “Sorry to worry my family and friends but in the midst of everything my phone broke but that is fine by me because we are all safe.”

On Wednesday, Anderson told the BDN, “It’s great to be on the ground safely. It’s nice to see everyone here and the love and support that we have.”

The team had been en route to Boston for a Wednesday night game against Boston University. According to published reports, Abbott believes it is unlikely the game will be made up. Maine is near the bottom of the conference standings, and BU is ineligible for the postseason after announcing its intention to leave the America East conference after this season.

Maine will conclude its season Saturday at home against the University of New Hampshire.
