BETHEL — The SAD 44 board expelled one Telstar High School student indefinitely and extended the suspension of another by unanimous votes Monday night.

Both disciplinary actions are related to the unlawful entries and thefts at Crescent Park Elementary School in Bethel that occurred near the end of January.

Superintendent David Murphy said the votes were taken following closed sessions that lasted more than two hours.

One of the boys is currently on a 10-day suspension, implemented by Telstar High School Principal Dan Hart, and will likely be back at school on or near March 11. The other is expelled until a re-entry plan is developed and accepted by the School Board.

Murphy declined to provide further details on the matter, including any damage which may have occurred during the break-ins or items involved in the thefts.

The board met with the district’s lawyer, Elek Miller from the firm of Drummond Woodsum, prior to holding the disciplinary hearings in order to discuss the legalities and other details of the suspensions and expulsions.

The board met in another 20-minute closed session at the beginning of the meeting to begin labor contract negotiations for the 125-member bargaining unit of the Telstar Education Association, which is comprised of teachers, secretaries and educational technicians.

Murphy said the current three-year contract expires on June 30.

In other matters, the board voted to amend a policy governing the time that future board meetings shall be adjourned. Because the board now meets at 6:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m., adjournment has been changed to 9:30 p.m.

At Monday’s meeting, however, the board met until 10:45 p.m.

Also on Monday, Murphy updated the board on the current renovation and rehabilitation project at the high school. He said Honeywell is currently conducting work that will not interfere with classes. The major portion of the ventilation project will be done during the summer.

Murphy also updated the board on the negotiations with the Andover Withdrawal Committee.

District representatives met with AWC representatives for the first time the Friday before the February winter vacation. At that time, the district provided a desired list of proposals for consideration if Andover chooses to leave the district.

Murphy said the district expects a response from the AWC within a few weeks. AWC Chairwoman Susan Merrow said last week that an informational meeting on the matter had been set for Feb. 27.
