DIXFIELD — The RSU 10 board earlier this week heard budget requests from the district’s three principals, made several appointments and acted on a 2013-14 school calendar that pretty much lines up with the two vocational schools some of the students attend.

George Reuter, principal of Buckfield Junior-Senior High School, requested the highest change for operation of the school, at about $31,000 more than the funding request for the previous school year. However, most of that additional money, $25,000, will be needed to begin the accreditation process for the New England Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges.

Whenever a high school must begin such a process, a team must be named and a thorough review of activities, academics and other parts of the high school must be studied. Also, the NEASC team must visit the school at least once for several days.

Michael Poulin, principal of Dirigo High School, requested the least amount of funds at just $250 over the current year’s figures.

Mountain Valley High School Principal Matt Gilbert’s presentation came in at about $23,000 over the current amount.

Assistant Superintendent and Curriculum Coordinator Gloria Jenkins also presented her budget, which reflected a $25,000 increase, largely due to the district’s goal toward implementing mass customized learning.

These presentations, as well as several yet to come, and several that have already been made, will likely be changed as the board goes through the budget preparation process.

The school calendar, which begins for the next school year, begins on Aug. 28 and runs through June 6, excluding snow days. For the first time, all school calendars within a district must differ no more than five days, according to state regulations.

Superintendent Tom Ward said this was particularly difficult to devise because RSU 10 is one of the few districts in the state that includes two vocational regions. The teachers’ association must now review and approve it before it goes into effect.

In other matters, the board:

* Reappointed Frank DiConzo and Wayne Thurston to additional terms on the Region 9 Cooperative board.

* Appointed Dana Kahkonen as a Dirigo Elementary School special education educational technician, Lorinda Payton and Debra Mawhinney as Mountain Valley Middle School special education educational technicians and Sue Pennington as a BJSHS school nutrition worker for 3.5 hours a day.

*Accepted the resignations of Nezinscot region bus driver Thomas Adams and MVHS special education teacher and golf coach Robert Fulton.

A plan to discuss future district facilities’ usage at this week’s meeting will take place at a special meeting or at the regular March 11 board meeting.
