LEWISTON — Cape Elizabeth got the defense it was looking for, limiting Greely to 18 shots on goal and limited time in the offensive zone.

But a limited Rangers offense is still a dangerous Rangers offense, and the Capers had little firepower with which to counter. Aidan Black opened the game with a goal less than two minutes in, and he added another in the second period after Cape Elizabeth tried to mount a comeback, leading the Rangers to a 7-2 win over Capers in their Western Class B semifinal at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Friday.

Jarod Lavallee also had a pair of goals and Reid Howland, Matt Ames and Mitchel Donovan also scored for No. 1 Greely, which advances to face Camden Hills in the West B regional final next Wednesday at the Colisee.

Cape Elizabeth’s stifling center-zone defense made it difficult for Greely to enter the offensive zone, but also precluded the Capers from mounting much of an offense. They got their chance to do some damage in the second period, though, trailing 2-0.

With Greely a man short after a slashing call, Cape took advantage as Brandon Negele smacked home a rebound in the crease to cut the Rangers’ lead in half at 2-1. The goal seemed to spark Greely. Just 1:18 later, Black netted his second of the game to reestablish a two-goal advantage. And with 2:26 to play in the middle frame, Howland snuck in behind the Cape defenders and lifted a backhander past keeper Grant Rusk for a 4-1 advantage.

Lavallee, a freshman, lofted a backhander high glove just after Greely killed off a penalty at 6:56 of the third to push the lead to 5-1. Eli Breed added a second goal for the Capers with 5:12 to play on a feed across the top of the crease from Curtis Guimond to give his team a breath of hope.

But late-game goals from Ames and Lavallee sealed the deal for the Rangers. Greely got their fans fired up in a hurry when Black escaped on a rush up the right wing. Reaching the circle, he snapped the puck over Cape keeper Grant Rusk’s glove shoulder just 1:13 into the contest for a 1-0 Greely advantage.

The teams battled through the middle part of the frame, with both sides delivering solid hits and protecting the puck well in the corners.

Neither team managed a lot of shots on goal. A penalty with 23 seconds to play in the first gave Greely its second opportunity with an extra skater, though, and after missing on the first chance, the Rangers connected on the second. With 10 seconds to play in the period, Donovan tapped in a perfect feed from Ted Hart at the right post to push the Greely lead to 2-0.
