CARRABASSETT VALLEY — The search for a 17-year-old skier from Medford, Mass., on Sugarloaf Mountain will continue for a third day Tuesday.

On Monday, 10 Maine Game Wardens, 25 volunteers and members of the Sugarloaf Ski Patrol resumed the effort to find Nicholas Joy, who was reported missing Sunday afternoon.

According to Maine Warden Service Lt.  Kevin Adam, the teen was last seen on the Binder trail — an intermediate trail — near the Timberline trail on the west side of the mountain.

Joy, who is an experienced skier, was with his father at 12:40 p.m. Sunday going to the top of the mountain for their last run of the day. After that run, they had planned to return home to Massachusetts.

That last run, according to wardens, should have taken between 10 and 15 minutes. When Joy did not appear in the parking lot where he was supposed to meet his father, the family reported him missing.

The young skier was wearing ski pants and a ski coat, but was not wearing a helmet.

Crews searched throughout the afternoon and much of Sunday night before suspending the operation temporarily at 1:30 a.m. due to poor visibility. They continued at first light Monday.

Temperatures Sunday night at Sugarloaf were in the mid-20s, with light snow falling.

“We’re very concerned,” Lt. Adam said Monday. With limited visibility and high winds of up to 35 mph, wardens were prevented from conducting an aerial search of western trails, he said.

The weather is not expected to improve Tuesday, limiting the Warden Service’s options in getting aircraft over the mountain. Snow-covered pine trees have made the foot search difficult, according to Adam, as searchers move through the woods.

The chairlift that services the trail Joy was last seen on was closed Monday due to high winds, according to resort officials. 

Patrollers and game wardens used skis, snowshoes, a Sno-Cat and snowmobiles to search both in-bounds and out-of-bounds areas Monday morning.

The ski area boundary on the west side of Sugarloaf is roped off and marked with round orange discs that warn skiers and riders of the ski area boundary.

John Diller, general manager at Sugarloaf, said that at the time Joy was reported missing, there may have been between 5,000 and 6,000 people on the mountain. Wardens hope someone may have seen where Joy went.

According to Lt. Adam, searchers have found no evidence that he skied out of bounds, but haven’t found any evidence that he stayed in bounds either.

Joy’s father, Robert Joy, has been on the mountain helping with the search, including showing searchers where he last saw his son. His mother, Donna Joy, arrived in Maine on Monday and is also helping with the search.

Officials are asking anyone who was on the mountain Sunday who might have information about Joy to call the Augusta communication centers at 207-624-7076, or 800-452-4664.

Joy is a senior at Medford High School, according to a school official there.

Roy Belson, superintendent of Medford Public Schools, said Joy’s mother asked the school not to speak to the press about her son.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family,” Belson said, and “we hope he will be found safe and sound.”

Belson also said school officials there “appreciate the efforts of the ski patrol and others who have tried to find him.”

In a separate incident at the nearby Saddleback Maine ski resort near Rangeley, searchers found two skiers Monday morning who were reported missing Sunday afternoon.

Maine Warden Service spokesman Doug Rafferty said the men went off the back side of the mountain and were found on a snowmobile trail. Their identities and condition weren’t immediately available.
