PORTLAND (AP) — The Maine Turnpike is preparing to open its first high-speed toll plaza.

The Maine Turnpike Authority said beginning April 1, drivers who use E-ZPass will be able to pay tolls electronically while driving at highway speeds at a plaza in New Gloucester.

When the new plaza opens, there will be one high-speed lane in each direction and three other lanes that can be used by cash or E-ZPass drivers.

Maine Turnpike Executive Director Peter Mills said the project will provide convenience for motorists, cut operating costs and reduce vehicle emissions because drivers won’t have to slow down to pay tolls.

About 80 percent of the turnpike’s commercial traffic and more than 60 percent of passenger vehicles now pay their tolls electronically.
