LEWISTON — It didn’t take long for the Greely Rangers to remind everyone just how dominant they’d been all season.
After being shut out of the goal scoring in the West A semifinal round, the Rangers’ top scorer, Ted Hart, exploded for three goals, including two in the first period, and Reid Howland added another hat trick as Greely topped Camden Hills 7-1 for the Western Class B hockey crown at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Wednesday.
Joe Saffian added the other Greely goal to go with a pair of helpers, and sophomore Kyle Kramlich stopped all 19 shots he saw to earn the win between the pipes. With the win, the Rangers advance to the Class B state title game Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Colisee, where they will face Messalonskee for a second consecutive season.
Greely defeated the Eagles in last year’s state final, 6-2, to earn the school’s second state title. Class B’s most prolific offense — the Rangers averaged better than six goals per game this season — struck quickly. Hart put top-seeded Greely (16-4-0) on top at 6:50 of the first on a feed from Mitch Donovan. He added another at 9:42 for a 2-0 lead, and Howland finished off his first tally at 13:50, sending the defending champions into the first break with a 3-0 lead.
The Windjammers (15-5-0) tried to counter in the second frame, and had a few good looks on Kramlich aided by an early power play. But the pressure ended soon after the penalty, and Hart capped his hat trick at 7:58 of the middle frame with his 34th of the season to push the lead to 4-0. Even a strong run from Camden Hills may not have been enough at that point. In 20 games, the Rangers are averaging only 2.1 goals against per game.
After a laser from Saffian made it 5-0, the Windjammers broke up Kramlich’s bid for a shutout at the 3:36 mark of the third period as Grayson Szumilas batted home a rebound to momentarily pull Camden Hills back within four at 5-1.
The moment lasted less than two minutes. Saffian assisted on two more from Howland in quick succession to cap the scoring. Jet Magri stopped 23 of 30 shots for the Windjammers in the loss, though he kept the team in the game early as both teams tried to find their footing. The win is Greely’s ninth in a row officially, and 13th in succession if you were to take away a pair of wins that were negated by the use of an illegal player after a miscommunication about eligibility rules following a penalty in mid-season.
The Rangers’ only two losses this season other than their 1-0 forfeit losses came in regulation time to Class A finalists Lewiston and Falmouth.
