Unfortunately for the Eagles, you aren’t allowed as much leeway with the goaltender. Rangers sophomore Kyle Kramlich aptly demonstrated that when he picked up a roughing minor — OK, maybe in self-defense — with 66 seconds remaining in the Class B hockey final.

The pucks Kramlich kicked out, covered and smothered prior to that sweep of his leg resonated the most loudly, though, staking the Rangers to a 3-0 victory, their second straight state championship and third in five years at Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

“If you were in the rink for the second period and saw four or five of the saves that he made, and just battled. Even down here in the third as well. He loves big games,” Greely coach Barry Mothes said. “He loves playing here in this rink. He loves to compete, and I think it brings out the best in him.”

Kramlich made 17 saves, more than half of them in Messalonskee’s furious flurry after Greely (17-4) grabbed a 1-0 lead 7:28 into the second period.

Aidan Black scored that goal, his 11th of the season in a 2-on-1 with junior classmate Joe Saffian.

That left it in the capable hands, feet and head of Kramlich, who helped stifle Messalonskee’s second of three fruitless power-play opportunities down the stretch in that period.

Chase Cunningham’s ringing of the right post with 1:45 remaining in the second was arguably the Eagles’ best chance to avoid the shutout.

Reid Howland and Hart tackled on goals in the third period. Hart’s was both short-handed and an empty-netter with 15 seconds left.

“I was seeing (the puck) really well. They were giving me good lanes. I was able to be aggressive like I like to. I wasn’t out there by myself,” Kramlich said. “I feel like I play better with a lead, because I have the confidence that everybody’s ready to go with me.”

Messalonskee (18-3) was markedly more successful at stifling Greely’s high-powered offense than in an 8-4 February loss. Ultimately, however, the Eagles made it back-to-back losses in the title game.

Ben Weeks made 28 saves for Messalonskee.

“You come out of the first period, we were playing OK, but they were dominating a little bit. We took over in the second. We just couldn’t score,” Messalonskee coach Mike Latendresse said. “Their goalie played well. Ben made some big saves. We were playing well. We just couldn’t finish.”

Greely owned a 10-2 shots advantage in the first period and elevated it to 16-4 before Messalonskee’s barrage at the end of the second.

Black, Saffian, Howland and Hart were stellar on the Rangers’ penalty kill.

“(Kramlich) seems to have a knack for big moments,” said co-captain Kyle Megathlin, one of only four Greely seniors. “It was great that he came up big for us today. It was great that we were able to put three home for him. He’s a big part of our team.”

Greely played a beefed-up schedule that included Class A finalists Lewiston and Falmouth, St. Dom’s and three schools from New Hampshire’s equivalent Division I.

“They made us work as hard as we’ve worked all season,” Mothes said of Messalonskee. “It was exciting. It was a great hockey game. It was a true final kind of game.”
