100 years ago, 1913
Two well-dressed, rather good appearing girls were coming along lower Main street, Lewiston, the other afternoon. Suddenly they stopped. One of them stepped to the side of a building and scratched a match. Onlookers wondered what in the world that young girl could want of a lighted match, but soon they learned. Right in the face and eyes of everyone, she lighted a cigarette and went up the street smoking.

50 years ago, 1963
“You’ve Seen Him Around” (column and photo) After spending nearly half a century in the employe of the Auburn Post Office, you’d think a man would welcome retirement, but not Edward C. Lord. He’s still busy, now running the elevator at the Auburn Savings Bank Building. “Ed,” as everyone up and down Court St. calls him, retired six years ago after 46 years as a mail carrier. He delivered the mail around the Auburn business district for about ten years, then was moved to the Pleasant and High Sts. Area. Born 72 years ago in Auburn, he and his wife, Hattie Moffitt of Calais were honored this past August at a golden wedding anniversary party.

25 years ago, 1988
The Lewiston Police Department is trying to fill six vacant patrol officer slots, but the strong economy and undesirable work hours have combined to keep applicants away, police and city officials said this morning. Despite paying the highest wages in Maine, the Lewiston Police Department is having difficulty attracting even mediocre candidates, according to Dennis R. Jean, Lewiston’s personnel director. “We’re not even getting people to the door and I’m not sure it is going to be any better the rest of the year,” he said. “There are just all kinds of other jobs available.”
