100 years ago, 1913
With an addition of over 60 members, the Civic Alliance of Lewiston brought its membership, Sunday evening, almost to the 900 mark. Altho the election is over, there seems to be no abatement in interest on the part of this organization. The hall in College block was crowded throughout the evening. One of the speakers said that had the campaign been a few days longer, Dr. R.J. Wiseman would have been elected. It was stated that Dr. Wiseman’s campaign did not cost thousands of dollars, for his supporters did not have the money the democrats did to spend. Voluntary subscriptions paid for the progressive campaign. No automobiles at $75 per day were hired from Portland.

50 years ago, 1963
The Nanking Restaurant of Lewiston, following extensive renovations and expansion, officially opens this week its new “Polynesian Room.” Herbert and Robert Chin, proprietors of the restaurant, have added a complete menu of “island” food to the already complete Chinese and American food lists they already carried. Privacy has been provided for guests by the installation of island village-type thatched huts which, in the dim light throb with island music. Decorations on the walls of this restaurant also point up the island motif.

25 years ago, 1988
The Lewiston-Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce has decided to lease space inside the Centreville Plaza in Lewiston’s downtown, ending a three-year search for new headquarters. Chamber President Gary Adams said the Chamber will occupy 2,100 square feet of space on the building’s ground floor at 179 Lisbon St., where Lewiston Mayor Maurice Labbe set up his campaign headquarters last fall.
