LEWISTON — Operation Hot Spots continues to roll.

A local man was arrested on a drug-trafficking charge, and police said they seized 26 grams of crack from an apartment on Birch Street.

On Monday night, local and federal agents went to 74 Birch St. where they used a search warrant based on information gleaned from an earlier Hot Spots operation.

Police said they found crack cocaine with a street value of $2,600 as well as cash believed to have originated through drug sales.

Arrested was Glenn Murchison, 30, who lives in the apartment. He was charged with aggravated drug trafficking.

According to court records, Murchison came to Lewiston from Roxbury, Mass. Last summer, he was convicted on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and possessing marijuana stemming from an incident the year before.

Murchison on Wednesday was being held at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn on $20,000 bail.

Police from a variety of local, state and federal agencies make up Operation Hot Spots, which was put into action in May.

Hot Spots patrols, which mainly target downtown Lewiston, have resulted in more than 60 arrests or summonses and at least 15 firearms have been recovered, police said.

Lewiston police Chief Michael Bussiere, who organized the effort, said the Monday night arrest could be viewed as a sign of things to come this spring and summer.

“In the coming months,” Bussiere said, “residents and business owners of the target, higher-crime areas can expect to see more proactive enforcement efforts and situational prevention strategies employed to help reduce crime and disorder in these neighborhoods.”
