CLERMONT, Fla. — Alayna Garbarino’s double drove home Molly Brown with the winning run in the 10th inning as the Bates softball team opened the  season with a 6-5 win over Lesley University Thursday morning at the National Training Center Tournament.
The Bobcats played again Thursday afternoon, this time losing 4-3 to Salve Regina.
Garbarino drove in two runs and scored another in the win over Lesley, while Brenna Callahan tossed six scoreless innings in relief of Kelsey Freedman to earn the win.
Mary Lewis went 3-for-5 in the game with two runs scored and two stolen bases to pace Bates’ offense.
In the loss to Salve Regina, Lewis went 2-for-3 in addition to a walk, scoring one run and stealing two bases.
Monks go 1-for-2
FORT MYERS, FL—Saint Joseph’s College (6-2) split a pair of contests in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Thursday morning. The Monks posted a 7-1 victory over Albright College (PA) (0-7) and closed with a 3-1 loss to Bethany Lutheran College (MN) (6-6).
Against Albright, Saint Joseph’s scored all the runs the team needed in the top of the first when shortstop Lindsay Moore plated Danyelle Shufelt with a double and later scored on a Heather Tripp  two-bagger.
In the closing contest of the day, the Monks ran into a buzz saw in Bethany Lutheran pitcher Nicole Starkson, who allowed four hits with nine strikeouts in a complete-game victory.
Bowdoin sweeps pair
LERMONT, Fla. — Bowdoin rolled to two more wins on Thursday, claiming an 8-4 win over Wesleyan and earned a 6-5 win over Salve Regina.
Hanna Wurgaft sparked the Bowdoin (4-0) offense against the Cardinals, going 4-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI’s.
Against Salve Regina, Bowdoin earned their second walk-off of the spring with a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh. Cielle Collins drove in Dimitria Spathakis with the game-tying run, setting the stage for Siena Mitman to single home Adriane Krul.

USM 17, St. Joe’s 7
GORHAM — Jacki Kelly scored a game-high five goals and recorded a school single-game record eight caused turnovers to help the University of Southern Maine defeat Saint Joseph’s College, 17-7, in a non-conference game Thursday.
Kellywas one of three USM (3-0) players to tally five points. Sarah Pelligrinelli had four goals and one assist while classmate Anh Nguyen connected for one goal and four assists.
Cassie Diplock led the Monks (2-2) with four goals and one assist.  
Baseball
Keene St. 4, Bowdoin 3
AVON PARK, Fla. — Bowdoin College dropped its first game of the spring, 4-3, in 11 innings to Keene State on Thursday.
Bowdoin (4-1) took a 3-0 lead in the third frame when Kyle LeBlanc scored on a passed ball, John Lefeber brought home Duncan Taylor with a sac fly and Dan Findley came home on an error.
Keene rallied to knot the game with single runs in the fourth, seventh and eighth innings, tying the contest on a passed ball in the eighth frame that forced extra innings.
Keene (5-7) then plated the game-winning run in the 11th on an error to take the 4-3 win. Kyle LeBlanc reached base four times, including three hits and a walk. He doubled and also had a stolen base. Dan Findley had two hits for Bowdoin.
Webster 5, St. Joe’s 0
ELOISE, FL – Webster University blanked Saint Joseph’s College, 5-0, in a RussMatt Central Florida Invitational contest on Thursday.
All five of the Gorloks’ runs were unearned as the Monks committed five errors in the team’s first loss of the 2013 season. Hard-luck starting pitcher Tyler Laverriere suffered the setback after allowing five runs off six hits and four walks with five strikeouts in the loss.
For Saint Joseph’s (6-1),  Mike Pratt was 2-for-4 and Brandon Chase went 2-for-3 .
For Webster (5-5), pitcher Cody Hafeli allowed seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts in a complete-game victory.
