For the third time in the past five years, the University of Maine hockey season ended in the Hockey East quarterfinals.

Derek Arnold’s goal 1:40 into overtime Friday night nudged host and top seed UMass Lowell to a 2-1 victory over No. 8 Maine at Tsongas Arena, giving the River a sweep of the best-of-three series.

Scott Wilson assisted both the overtime goal and the tying tally in the third period for UMass Lowell (24-10-2), which prevailed 4-2 in Thursday’s opener.

Maine (11-19-8) bowed out despite 35 saves from Martin Ouellette.

The Black Bears, who took two of three regular-season meetings from the River Hawks, will miss the NCAA tournament for the fifth time in six seasons.

Adam Shemansky had the lone shot on goal in overtime for Maine against Connor Hellebuyck, who finished with 18 saves.

Shemansky missed wide with the rebound attempt before UMass Lowell cleared the zone and mounted its game-winning attack.

Jake Rutt scored at 7:51 of the second period to give Maine a 1-0 lead.

The power-play goal came 11 seconds after UMass Lowell’s Riley Wetmore went off the ice for holding.

Ryan Lomberg won a faceoff in the River Hawks’ defensive zone and zipped the puck to Rutt, who cashed in his fifth goal of the season.

Maine had just killed off its own short-handed situation with the help of four saves from Ouellette and a blocked shot by Lewiston’s Mark Anthoine.

UMass Lowell’s Ryan McGrath also hit the post and was denied during that sequence.

The Black Bears averted disaster after Joey Diamond received a major penalty for kicking and a match disqualification with 1:56 remaining in the second period.

Ouellette made three saves in the waning moments of the period to protect the lead, and Maine killed off the remainder of the five-minute disadvantage without surrendering a shot to start the third stanza.

Anthoine sacrificed his body for another key shot deflection during that penalty kill.

The River Hawks’ mounting pressure eventually paid off, however, with a goal at the four-minute mark.

Michael Fallon collected the equalizer, only his second goal of the season. Fallon stuffed home the leftovers after Ouellette denied back-to-back bids by Wilson.

Bates takes two

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Bates softball team came up with two clutch wins on Friday, defeating Westfield State 4-3 with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, then shutting out Becker College 2-0 with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Trailing 3-1 and going into the bottom of the seventh against Westfield, sophomore Brenna Callahan and senior Mary Lewis led off with back-to-back singles. Sophomore Kelsey Freedman loaded the bases with a one-out single, and junior Alayna Garbarino followed with a fourth single, scoring Callahan.
Bates (3-1) went on to post a 2-0 win over Becker College, with Freedman and Caroline Gattuso combining for eight strikeouts in a three-hit shutout.
Maine picks up two
CLEARWATER, Fla. — Jean Stevens and Hilary Kane each homered as the University of Maine softball team defeated Quinnipiac 8-7 on Friday afternoon. Stevens finished the game 1-for-4 with three RBI as Kane went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when EmJ Fogel singled down the left field line allowing Kristen Koslosky to score from second.
Jean Stevens drove in two runs on a home run in the bottom of the third while Hannah Hill of Fryeburg gave up just one run in the circle as the University of Maine softball team defeated Rhode Island 2-1 on Friday afternoon.

Wentworth sweeps
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Sophomore Jake Mailman went 8-for-9 with seven RBI to help fuel the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team’s sweep of Colby-Sawyer in a doubleheader played at Chain of Lakes Park. The Leopards took the first game, 17-3, and finished the sweep with an 8-5 win.
Wentworth rounded out the scoring with a single run in the seventh as senior Steffon Polius reached on a fielder’s choice, plating sophomore Scott Ouellette of Lewiston.
