AUBURN — The Auburn group studying Edward Little High School’s building options will not recommend the city construct a new high school on a new site.

Although most New High School Steering Committee members had favored building new in January, the committee agreed earlier this month that there are too few adequate sites available to build away from the current property.

The committee will instead vote Thursday on the remaining options: build new on the existing site, renovate the current school or renovate and expand it.

Building new on site is expected to cost an estimated $59 million, according to the School Department. A renovation is expected to cost $50.3 million.

The cost of a renovation-and-expansion combination would depend on the size and scope of the expansion.

The committee will ultimately make its recommendation to the Auburn School Committee, which could then vote on a plan to send to voters.  There is no state construction money for the project, so Auburn taxpayers would be asked to pay the full bill.

The committee will meet Thursday at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at Auburn Hall.
