WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Freshman southpaw Tyler Leavitt pitched five innings of no-hit baseball to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 13-3 victory over the University of Scranton in a non-conference game Monday.
Leavitt allowed only two base runners, both being hit by a pitch, in his five-inning stint. The left-hander, making his first appearance of the spring, mowed down the last 11 batters he faced, including five by strikeout.
John Carey went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and two RBI to pace the Huskies’ 14-hit attack. Tucker White also had three hits — a triple and two singles — and three RBIs in the game for USM (7-3).
Colby splits pair
AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Colby scored nine runs in the first three innings on the way to a 13-0 victory over Hamilton in the opening game of a doubleheader on Monday. The Continentals took a 9-6 victory over Colby in the second game to earn the split.
Brady Hesslein threw a complete game in the opener, striking out six and allowing just one walk. Only one base runner reached third base as Hesslein scattered five hits. Alec Finigan and Tim Corey each drove in three runs and Luke Duncklee, Dan Csaplar, Nathan Ellis, and Tim Corey all had RBI singles for the Mules. Duncklee finished with three hits and two runs to lead Colby (3-1).
In the second game, Hamilton (6-6) scored five times in the fourth inning to pull away. Nils Carlson had two hits and a run scored for the Mules.
Softball
Mules drop one, win next two
CLERMONT, Fla. -— Colby bounced back after dropping the completion of Sunday’s suspended game and earned a 9-8 victory over Kalamazoo and a 12-7 win against Houghton College in non-conference play Monday.
Colby started the day by falling 7-2 to University of Chicago in a game that was started on Sunday. The Mules had their afternoon game with Chicago postponed in the third inning because of inclement weather.
Aimee Polimeno threw 6 1/3 innings to earn the victory against Kalamazoo, while Megan Michie came on to pick up the save for Colby (2-2).
Meaghan Lewia had a triple among her two hits, scored twice, and drove in one run.
Brianne Wheeler also had two hits and drove in one run.
In the Houghton game, Lewia stayed hot with a home run among her two hits, two walks, and three RBI. Carylanne Wolfington, Emily Schatz, and Lindsay Peterson all had two hits for the Mules. All three players had one double. Wolfington scored a pair of runs, Peterson drove in two runs and scored twice, and Schatz had one RBI.
Women’s lacrosse
UNE 21, Husson 10
BIDDEFORD — Twelve different players scored as the University of New England registered a 21-10 non-conference women’s lacrosse victory over Husson University on Monday.
Hannah Tavella and Gina Newsome each finished with eight points on the day for UNE (2-4). Tavella had four goals and four assists, Newsome two goals and two assists.
For Husson (2-2), Haley Huntington and Anna Wolterbeek notched two goals apiece.
