WISCASSET (AP) — An Episcopal priest has been sentenced to 45 days behind bars after pleading guilty to mailing illicit drugs to inmates at a Maine jail.

The Rev. Stephen Foote of Bremen was sentenced Tuesday in Wiscasset District Court to a year in jail with all but 45 days suspended, a year of probation and community service.

In a plea deal with prosecutors, the 70-year-old Foote pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of possession of suboxone. He had faced the more serious charge of trafficking in prison contraband.

Prosecutors say Foote mailed suboxone to inmates he knows at the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset. Suboxone is used to treat opiate addiction.

Foote said in a statement that he deeply regrets “the harm and embarrassment” he brought on the church.
