DIXFIELD — The Dixfield Withdrawal Committee and RSU 10 on Friday came closer to an agreement that could end the town’s effort to leave the school district.
Chairman Bob Withrow will send a copy of the proposed amendments from both sides to the committee’s lawyer, Dan Stockford, of the Lewiston firm of Brann and Isaacson.
“We need this put into a form that can be presented to the town,” he said.
If Stockford and the school district’s attorney, Bill Stockmeyer, concur, an amended agreement will go to the RSU 10 board at a Facilities Committee meeting at 6 p.m. April 2.
The next Dixfield Withdrawal committee is at 5 p.m. April 3 at the district’s Central Office.
Dixfield residents could vote on the proposal at their annual town meeting May 23 or by referendum June 11.
Superintendent Tom Ward said Friday that the school board will likely take action on an agreement at its April 8 meeting.
If voters reject the proposal, negotiations would begin again.
The committee was formed after Ward suggested last spring that the district look into combining Dirigo High School in Dixfield and Mountain Valley High School in Rumford to save money.
An RSU 10 board meeting drew more than 600 people who adamantly opposed such a merger.
RSU 10 has 10 schools and 2,800 students from the towns of Canton, Carthage, Dixfield, Peru, Buckfield, Hartford, Sumner, Byron, Mexico, Roxbury, Rumford and Hanover.
