BUCKFIELD — A local woman was shot in the neck during an argument Monday afternoon, but she is expected to survive.
The victim is Sharon Demayo, 38, of Buckfield, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a statement.
Demayo’s live-in boyfriend, Scott Ackley, 41, was arrested and charged with domestic assault, McCausland said.
Two teenage boys present during the shooting reportedly were not harmed.
At approximately 5:30 p.m. Monday, Maine State Police, Oxford County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Buckfield Fire Department responded to the call of a shooting at 51 Depot St.
According to Travis Peer of Buckfield, he was playing video games at the home of his friend Justin, Demayo’s son, when Demayo and her live-in boyfriend, Ackley, entered the house.
Peer said the couple had been “drinking quite a bit” earlier and returned home arguing. Peer said Ackley became “quite aggressive” toward Demayo.
According to Peer, Demayo left and entered the room with a 9mm handgun that was kept in the house in an attempt to break up the fight. She then went on to say to Ackley, “’Hit me, I dare you,’” repeatedly.
Peer said that he looked away for just a couple of seconds. That was when, Peer said, Ackley took the gun from Demayo and, “A gun shot went off and my friend’s mother hit the floor.”
Peer said it looked like Demayo was bleeding from her nose and said that he didn’t know if she had been shot or had received a bloody nose in the fall.
Peer said Demayo didn’t say anything at first but as he started dialing 911 on his phone, she began calling for help from the floor.
Within minutes, police arrived, Peer said. He and Demayo’s son fled the house.
According to Peer, police held Ackley for about 20 minutes on the floor while assessing the situation.
Ackley remained at the scene talking to state police officers while Demayo was removed to an ambulance about 100 yards down the street to await evacuation by Life Flight which had landed in front of the Highway Department garage.
At 8:40 p.m., Aclkey was cuffed and taken away by the Maine State Police. According to Trooper Kyle Tillsley, the incident is still under investigation. Ackley is being held at the Oxford County Jail and charged with domestic assault.
