BUCKFIELD — A man accused of shooting his girlfriend in the neck Monday during an argument is scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday on a charge of domestic violence assault.
Scott L. Ackley, 41, of 51 Depot St., is being held on $15,000 cash bail at the Oxford County Jail in Paris, according to officials. He is set to be arraigned in 11th District Court in Paris on Wednesday.
Police said Ackley was arrested after Sharon Demayo, 38, was shot at the home they shared. Demayo is at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Her sister, Amy Liberman, said Tuesday that Demayo faces a long road of reconstructive surgery. She spent almost five hours in surgery Tuesday in the first of possibly many surgeries to reconstruct her jaw.
“She’s going to have to have quite a bit of plastic surgery,” Liberman said, adding that surgeons have to reconstruct the right side of Demayo’s face. The bullet exited through her jaw and upper lip.
Demayo’s jaw was wired shut. She lost several teeth in the shooting and Liberman says her sister will have more pulled from chipping and breakage.
Maine State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said Ackley and Demayo were intoxicated at the time of the shooting and were arguing over a set of lost car keys. McCausland said the fight “escalated into gunfire.”
Travis Peer of Buckfield said he and his friend, Justin, Damayo’s son, were in the home at the time of the shooting. Peer told the Sun Journal on Monday that Ackley became “quite aggressive” toward Demayo after the two returned from a bar. He said Demayo left the room and came back with a 9mm handgun and eventually told Ackley, “’Hit me; I dare you.’”
Peer said Ackley took the gun from Demayo and she ended up on the floor with a gunshot wound.
Demayo was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to CMMC. She is not being charged in the incident, McCausland said. He said she is expected to survive her wounds, but he didn’t have more specific information on her condition.
He said state police detectives got a warrant and searched the house Monday night and into early Tuesday. A team of detectives followed up on the work of the troopers who initially responded.
