ORONO —Kyle Silva belted a grand slam in a nine-run fourth inning as the University of Maine baseball team defeated Thomas 19-3 on Tuesday night at Mahaney Diamond in Orono. Michael Fransoso also drove in four runs, while Nick Bernardo finished with three RBI. Maine improves to 18-14 on the season, while Thomas falls to 5-12.
Maine jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Fransoso drove home Troy Black, who had singled, and Colin Gay, who had walked, with a triple. Fransoso scored on a sacrifice fly.
BANGOR — Husson University baseball downed the University of Maine at Farmington, 18-4 and 9-6, in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader Tuesday at the Winkin Complex.
In Game 1, the two teams played through four scoreless innings before the Eagles’ Jordan Carter hit a triple all the way to the fence in right center followed by a single up the middle by Ben McLain in the top of the fifth.
Husson added two more runs in the top of the sixth. Shawn Smith led off the inning with a walk and was then successful in is attempt to steal second base. J.T. Whitten followed with a triple down the right field line, which scored Smith from second. Brandon Campbell brought Whitten across the plate with a double to left center. Ian McAlister came in for UMF to relieve starter Casey Ashey following the two runs.
The Beavers would rally in the bottom of the sixth to bring four runs across which ultimately gave them a 4-3 lead. Farmington’s runs came off a Tom Grady single which brought in a run, an Ethan Jean single which plated two more, and a Ben Keene of Livermore sacrifice fly that brought a run.
USM 16, St. Joe’s 2
GORHAM — Senior Nick Grady went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored to pace a 14-hit attack as the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team defeated the St. Joseph’s College Monks 16-2 in a non-conference game at USM Baseball Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
Southern Maine hit four triples and stole eight bases on the day. Grady had a triple and three singles, and extended his hitting streak to 16 games. He also had two stolen bases. Grady, who has registered multiple hits in seven of his last eight games, is now hitting a team-leading .494 (42-for-85) with eight doubles and 27 RBI through 19 games.
Senior Tucker White went 2-for-3 with a triple, double, four runs scored and two RBI, and junior Matt Verrier of Norway was a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs scored. White’s triple increased his USM career-leading mark to 23. Junior Troy Thibodeau finished 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored, and freshman Sam Dexter added two singles.
Men’s lacrosse
Keene State 6, Bowdoin 5
BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Keene State men’s lacrosse team held Bowdoin scoreless for the final 40:14 and rallied to take a 6-5 win on Tuesday evening at Ryan Field.
Bowdoin’s Franklin Reis scored four times to lead all players. Ian Hart, Tyler McKelvie and JT Galloway scored twice apiece to account for Keene State’s scoring.
After Galloway scored the initial goal of the contest, Bowdoin rolled off three straight – all by Reis – to take a 3-1 advantage. McKelvie was able to get one back for the Owls late in the opening stanza to trim the lead to 3-2 after one period.Bowdoin opened the second quarter with consecutive goals from David Nemirov and Reis to take a 5-2 advantage with 10:14 remaining in the half. But the Polar Bears would not score again and Keene got tallies from McKelvie and Hart to make it 5-4 before intermission.

USM prevails
GORHAM — Freshman Seth Adams earned his first collegiate win with a 6-3, 6-4 win at fifth singles as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Thomas College Terriers 9-0 in a non-conference men’s tennis match Tuesday afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex.
The Huskies led from the start sweeping all three doubles points.Junior Christopher G. Ross and sophomore Thaddeus St. John of Weld and junior Corey Dyke of Monmouth and senior Jonathan Sproul each teamed to earn 8-0 victories at second and third doubles respectively. Ross and St. John defeated Thomas sophomores Gershom Reneeand Jonte Roussel, while Dyke and Sproul downed freshmen Evan Boudreau and Kade Strout.
