Spruce Mountain Middle School eighth-graders Kylee Jackson and Summer Vigue show their project at Wednesday night’s school science fair in Jay. They were members of the “We Are Going to Mars” team, which earned first place in creativity. Other members of the team were Alex Bessey, Liz St. Pierre, Andrew Cantanese and Jessica Judd. The team created hydroponic gardening beds, a windmill, a water filtering system and other devices that would be required if people tried to live on Mars. The theme for all 20 six-member teams was to show what technology would be necessary in order to sustain human life on the planet. Summer said she learned that Mars has only 48 percent gravity and that rocket fuel could be made from carbon dioxide, oxygen and water.
