PARIS — Firefighters put their recent training in cold water rescue to use on Wednesday, to reach Luna, a 4-year-old Great Pyrenees, stranded on an island in Halls Pond.

About 15 emergency personnel from Paris, Norway, Oxford and PACE ambulance responded to the call about noon on Halls Pond Road.

Two rescuers clad in waterproof “gumby suits” used an inflatable cold water rescue craft to cross the thin ice and freezing water to reach Luna and return her to shore.

According to owner Sophia Maamouri, Luna went missing during a walk around the pond Wednesday morning.

Maamouri said she spent most of the early morning searching for Luna before finally locating her on the island.

She tried to reach the dog on her own but dangerously thin ice forced her to turn back and call 911, Maamouri said.

She guessed that Luna may have fallen in the water trying to catch minnows and made it onto the island.

Fire Chief Brad Frost said it was standard procedure to call for backup, in case firefighters were put in danger during the rescue.

Paris Fire recently purchased the inflatable craft with a donation and, until Luna’s rescue, had only trained with the device, Frost said.

According to Frost, nine Paris firefighters are trained in cold water rescue.

The levity of the moment wasn’t lost on Katey Branch, a Halls Pond Road resident and Maamouri’s neighbor, as she watched Paris firefighters get ready to head out on the ice.

“I’ve always heard of the firefighters coming to save the cat, but I’ve never seen it before,” Branch remarked.

Luna was unharmed during the episode, but seemed happy to be on dry land again.
