CANTON — Selectmen at their meeting Thursday night expressed regret over the resignation of Deputy Clerk Kelly-Jo Levasseur who left to accept another job.
They also heard from Selectman Shane Gallant of the Town-Owned Land Committee, who said whether to move the town offices to the Fire Department building or elsewhere, and what other property should be disposed of depends on the availability of the unused Maine Department of Transportation garage on Route 108. The town is interested in buying it for several reasons, including the fact that it has a sand/salt shed. If it doesn’t buy it, the town will be forced to construct a salt/sand shed.
Selectmen favor installing a tank for diesel fuel for town equipment at the town garage on Route 108, but want to hold off until a decision is made on obtaining the MDOT property. They voted to buy the tank with money in the Highway Department maintenance budget, but not install it yet.
A gravel section of Alden Hill Road that is only accessible through Jay will be graded by Jay for $120 an hour when it does the Jay end, Town Clerk Harry Childs said. Canton does not have a road grader.
Selectmen again discussed the pros and cons of turning Tessier Road back to gravel but made no decision.
Selectman Lisa Cummings said she has been working with the Recreation Committee, which is working on plans for the summer.
Doris Neptune had sought permission to hold a Native American powwow at the Canton ball field, but decided not to this year, the board said.
Five bids, ranging from $1,600 to $2,501, were received for the town’s out-of-service firetruck. Selectmen accepted the highest bid from Dwaine Conant of Conant Acres, contingent on payment in 30 days.
Selectmen accepted a tax payment agreement from a resident who owes three years of taxes. The property owner will be required to make 15 monthly payments of $320 each and if he doesn’t the town will foreclose on the property.
Raymond Fortier was abated $612.03 on his sewer bill, because he was erroneously charged as if there were a house on his property.
