PARIS — Firefighters put their recent training in cold water rescue to use on Wednesday to reach Luna, a 4-year-old Great Pyrenees stranded on an island in Halls Pond.

Approximately 15 emergency personnel from Paris, Norway, Oxford and PACE ambulance responded to the call at around noon on Halls Pond Road.

Two rescuers wearing survival gear called “gumby suits” used an inflatable craft to cross the thin ice and freezing water to reach the dog and return her to shore. She appeared unharmed.

According to owner Sophia Maamouri, Luna went missing during a walk around the pond Wednesday morning. She said she spent most of the early morning searching for her before finding her on the island. She tried to reach the dog on her own but dangerously thin ice forced her to turn back and call 911, she said.

She guessed that Luna may have fallen in the water trying to catch minnows and made it to the island.

Fire Chief Brad Frost said his department recently purchased the inflatable craft with a donation and had only trained with the device. He said nine Paris firefighters are trained in cold water rescue.

HOME SAFE — Luna receives some love after being towed to shore during a cold water rescue on Halls Pond in Paris April 10. Sophia Maamouri, Luna’s owner, guesses the dog fell into the pond trying to catch minnows and made it to an island, where she waited for rescue.
