RUMFORD — Reports of a possible chimney fire sent fire crews from Rumford and Mexico to the former armory on Lincoln Street on Tuesday night.
According to Rumford Deputy Chief Richard Coulombe, the call was received at 8:03 p.m. Tuesday, bringing seven firefighters from Rumford and 12 from Mexico.
Once inside, Coulombe said crews found thick, black smoke coming from the furnace room. There was no fire and it appeared the furnace had just backed up.
Coulombe said the furnace was shut down and crews worked to rid the room of smoke and dangerous carbon monoxide levels.
Coulombe said the smoke and carbon monoxide hazards were confined to the furnace room and other floors were not affected.
