AUBURN — Turn lanes would be added to both sides of the Park Avenue–Mount Auburn Avenue intersection in 2014, according to a Maine Department of Transportation plan.

“It’s there for safety,” city engineer Dan Goyette said. “It’s designed to allow better traffic movement by having a dedicated turn lane for each direction.”

The city is hosting an overview of the proposed work at 6 p.m. April 24 in Auburn Hall.

Plans call for the intersection work to go out to bid in the fall, with construction likely beginning next spring.

The MDOT’s estimates say the work would cost up to $636,000.

Goyette said the project is based on results of a 2006 study of the traffic patterns on the road from Court Street to Mount Auburn Avenue.

Neighbors complained that the route was becoming a favorite shortcut for Poland and Minot residents going to the Mount Auburn Avenue Walmart and the Auburn Mall.

Goyette said the work takes the increased traffic into account.

“It would allow through traffic to continue along Mount Auburn Avenue,” he said. “It also allows more room for stacking for both left- and right-turning traffic from Park onto Mount Auburn.”
