RUMFORD — The Rumford Eagles will host a Child Advocacy Day for area youth Saturday, May 4, at its property at 129 Rumford Ave.

A yard sale will be held also and the group is looking for donations, President Fred Allen said Thursday in an email.

“We are looking to promote the yard sale this year to help raise more money for the kids,” he said. “We are looking for folks who would like to purchase a slot for $20 for personal sales or donate items for the benefit table, with all proceeds going toward our youth groups.”

The group is also looking for items for its Chinese auction, which will run all day.

“If you or you know of someone who might be doing some spring hoeing out and are looking to get rid of some items that might be of use to someone else, this cause could certainly use the donation,” Allen said.

All money raised will be divided evenly among all the participating youth groups. Past participating groups include the Greater Rumford Community Center, Mexico Recreation, the RSU 10 Wellness Team, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Explorers, Girl Scouts, Area Youth Football, Area Youth Cheerleaders, and Area Youth Ministry.

Some of the programs include retina scanning done by the Rumford Police Department, a new technology for child identification that replaces fingerprinting, a 911 phone demonstration by the Rumford Fire Department, and information from Rumford Community Hospital.

Tables will be set up with safety information on bullying, the Internet.

“Child Advocacy Day is a fun day for youth to enjoy, and the community to educate and protect their children,” Allen said.

There will be a bicycle safety rodeo, all-terrain vehicle safety demonstrations, a bounce tent, games, prizes, balloons and face painting.

The yard sale in the parking lot will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be entertainment and a lunch tent with hot dogs, hamburgers and fries.

Across the street in the Eagles Function Hall from 5 to 7 p.m., a spaghetti supper will be served at a cost of $6. At 8 p.m. The Hooligans band will perform for ages 21 and older. The cover charge is $6.

Allen said he hopes people coming to downtown Rumford on May 4 for Envision Rumford’s daylong debut Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Festival will take in Kids Advocacy Day, too.

“Hopefully with the Lumberjack Fest going on the same day, we can feed off each other,” Allen said.

“This day is all about the kids; they are our future,” he said.
