MEXICO — Seventeen students in grades three to six from Mexico, Peru, Rumford and Sumner schools were awarded Future of Maine College Aspirations Scholarships during a ceremony at Region 9 School of Applied Technology on April 30.

The ceremony, which was supported by Maine College Circle and Dead River Co., marked the second year Maine College Circle has awarded $100 scholarships to area schools. The awards are based on essays they wrote about their college aspirations, as well as what they wish to do for a career after they graduate.

The recipients are:

From Hartford-Sumner Elementary School, Shane Adams, Cole Merrill, Olivia Buswell, Noah Wiley and David McAlister.

From Dirigo Elementary School, Page Lueders, Isabelle Picard and Spencer Jacques.

From Meroby Elementary School, Phoenix Hughes.

From Rumford Elementary School, Alice LeDuc, Alexis Allegra, Jessica Bordeau, Alycin Jodrey, Xandra Miller, Hannah St. Laurent, Gracie Farnum and Emily Buono.

In a news release by Dead River Co., scholarship committee member Natalie Sneller said, “This program gives our community the opportunity to support the aspirations of local students and plant a seed in young kids’ minds about the idea of going to college.”

In the same release, Bob Stuart, executive director of Maine College Circle, said, “Of course we want to encourage children toward four-year degrees, but also toward vocational and technical education. We want them to aspire to greater knowledge, to careers in a profession or a trade.”

Maine College Circle is a nonprofit organization that helps give Maine students support and encouragement in achieving higher education.
