FARMINGTON — RSU 9 is changing to a commercial insurance policy to cover damage to student laptop computers at the start of the new school year.
Currently the district provides a self-insured type of coverage that parents pay a premium for and a deductible when damage occurs.
Under the new plan, parents or guardians will be able to buy full coverage under the insurance policy for about $70 and there will be no deductible, Superintendent Mike Cormier told the school board Tuesday night.
The new policy will cover most damage, including spills, he said. Currently, spill damage is not covered.
Parents paid $30, $40 or $50 for this year’s coverage, depending on how much insurance they wanted, and there was a $75 deductible, he said.
The district has a fund to help students and families who cannot afford insurance.
Insurance is not a requirement for laptop use, he said.
The student and his/her parents are responsible for compensating RSU 9 for any losses, costs or damages incurred by the school unit for violations of school board policies and school rules while the student is using school computers, including the cost of investigating such violations, according to district policy.
