FARMINGTON — Franklin County commissioners voted 2-1 Tuesday to accept the resignation of Sheriff’s Department Detective Tom White of Jay, who is retiring.
Commissioner Gary McGrane of Jay opposed the vote.
“I like Tom. I thought he did a wonderful job for the county,” McGrane said.
He told Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. that he hoped there would be some kind of recognition for White as there has been recently for other employees of the department.
Nichols said there would be.
White challenged Nichols, of New Sharon, for the sheriff’s position in the primary in June 2012 and lost his bid to represent the Republican party.
White has been a deputy sheriff for 26 years — both part-time and full-time. His last day is May 31.
Nichols plans to post the detective’s position in-house. He has already posted one detective position after Lt. David St. Laurent was promoted. St. Laurent took the position that Detective Lt. Niles Yeaton held for years prior to his retirement on April 30.
In other business, commissioners voted to add Colt Sleaster of Jefferson to the roster for part-time reserve deputies. He is currently a full-time corrections officer at the Maine State Prison.
Sleaster is looking to move to the area, Nichols said.
