BETHEL — The Bethel Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Bethel Conservation Committee and a group of Telstar students, are meeting from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 25, at Davis Park to clean up trash in the area.
Jessie Seymour Perkins of the Bethel Chamber of Commerce said this is the first year the chamber has gotten involved with the town cleanup.
“We’re calling it the Bethel Green-Up Day,” she said. “The Chamber of Commerce has a new committee called the Sustainability Committee. We realized that a lot of our members overlap with the Bethel Conservation Committee, so we figured that this would be a good, easy way to do something that helps the town.”
In addition to the chamber and the Bethel Conservation Committee, she said, Telstar High School’s Rotary Interact Club will participate.
“It’s a part of their community service, so we have a wide variety of people helping out with this,” she said.
The public is invited to participate, she said, picking a spot near Davis Park to begin gathering trash. Bagged trash will be brought to a transfer station by volunteers.
“We threw this thing together within the last couple of weeks, so we’ll be happy with any amount of people volunteering,” she said. “Whatever we can get is better than doing nothing at all. If it turns out good, we’re hoping to make it a yearly effort.”
Free cookies will be available for those who attend the cleanup. She also suggested that volunteers bring gloves and sturdy shoes.
