BUCKFIELD — The Western Foothills Land Trust has been awarded a $24,000 grant from the Federal Recreational Trail Program to complete work on the Packard Trail off Sodom Road in Buckfield.

Lee Dassler of the Land Trust said money, which is administered by the Division of Parks and Public Lands, has been awarded to trails projects across the state but had been held up for almost a year.

Once completed, the Packard Trail will provide the community with a two-mile loop off the Sodom Road, Dassler said, for nonmotorized recreational activity.

The trail, named for Buckfield settler and Revolutionary War veteran Daniel Packard, was designed by Caribou Recreational LLC for walking, running, hiking and snowshoeing. The project was initiated in 2012 with Land for Maine’s Future funding, a private contribution, and many hours of volunteer labor.

Approximately a half mile of the loop was completed last summer. The entire trail was cut by volunteers last fall to provide snowshoe access, Dassler said.

This year’s award will fund the balance of the machine work needed, she said. Work by Caribou LLC is scheduled to begin in June, depending upon conditions. Anyone wishing to help with handwork on the trail should contact the trust at 207-739-2124.
