OGUNQUIT — Residents in a southern Maine town are deciding this week whether to ban the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.
If voters approve the measure at the polls Tuesday, Ogunquit would become the first community in the state to enact an outright ban.
Ogunquit Conservation Commission Chairman Michael Horn tells the Maine Sunday Telegram there’s been little opposition to the proposal. The commission talked with lawn service operators and landscapers to alert them, but nobody showed up to oppose the proposal at three public hearings.
Residents say Ogunquit, which has about 1,200 residents, has a strong environmental commitment. It’s one of 25 municipalities statewide with a pesticide-control ordinance, and it has more restaurants and hotels certified as environmental leaders by the state than any other place in Maine.
