NORWAY — Incumbent selectmen in Norway and Oxford were re-elected during Tuesday’s annual town election.
Norway Selectman Mike Twitchell won re-election in the uncontested race with 180 votes. Bruce Cook, a selectman from 2007 to 2010 and member of the Planning Board and Budget Committee, also won election to the seat with 165 votes. He succeeds Irene Millett who did not seek re-election.
Twitchell, who is expected to become chairman of the board this year, said he was pleased to return to office.
“I like being on the board. I’ve learned a lot,” he said shortly after the polls closed at 8 p.m.
Also in Norway, longtime SAD 17 Director Donald Ware won re-election with 194 votes.
Elected to the Norway Memorial Library Board of Trustees were Doris Ray with 184 votes, incumbent Tom Curtis with 189 and David Wilson with 178.
In Oxford, where only about 120 voters cast ballots, incumbent Selectman Jay Goforth, a board member since 2007, and Selectman Scott Owens, a member since 2004, won re-election with 100 and 95 votes, respectively.
Longtime school board member Ron Kugell, who serves as chairman, was re-elected with 99 votes and director Olive Sanborn retained her seat with 102 votes.
Oxford Water District Trustee Thomas Kennison was re-elected with 104 votes.
In Harrison, Selectman Kathleen Laplante was elected with 183 votes. Write-in candidate for the SAD 17 board of directors Ann Macro was elected with 103 votes . John Strickland was elected to the Appeals Board for a five-year term with 116 votes. Barbara Varricchio was elected to a one-year term on the Planning Board with 169 votes and incumbent candidate Robert Celeste received 148 votes for a three-year term on the Planning Board.
Voting was slow throughout Oxford Hills, particularly in towns that only had the school budget referendum. West Paris cast a total of 53 votes; Hebron, 40; Waterford, 41; and Otisfield, 78.
Oxford and Norway decided to hand-count their ballots because using voting machines would have cost more money.
